## The Handicap

The handicap here is straightforward: **we believe Vanderbilt is still underrated by the market.**

Vanderbilt is catching **+9.5 at home against Ole Miss**, but our opponent-adjusted model sees considerably less separation between these teams than the betting market does.

The market still appears to be pricing some of the historical gap between Vanderbilt and the upper tier of the SEC. Our numbers care much more about what these teams are doing now, and Vanderbilt's underlying performance has been substantially more competitive than its reputation suggests.

The best evidence came against Georgia.

Vanderbilt lost that game **38–14**, which isn't going to do much to change public perception. But underneath the final score, Vanderbilt produced the **best offensive performance Georgia has faced this season by several of our efficiency measures**.

### How Georgia's Opponents Performed

*Competitive/garbage-time filtered*

| Georgia Opponent | EPA/Play | Success Rate | Rush YPP | Rush Success | Pass YPP |
| ---------------- | --------- | ------------ | -------- | ------------ | -------- |
| Tennessee State | \-0.74 | 33.3% | \-4.5 | 0.0% | 4.0 |
| Western Kentucky | \-0.82 | 16.7% | 2.5 | 50.0%\* | \-0.5 |
| Arkansas | \-0.27 | 33.3% | 3.0 | 11.1% | 4.5 |
| Oklahoma | \-0.70 | 35.3% | 2.0 | 16.7% | 7.4 |
| **Vanderbilt** | **+0.13** | **40.9%** | **4.2** | **38.1%** | **8.0** |

*\*Very small rushing sample.*

Vanderbilt posted the **best EPA/play, overall success rate and passing yards per play** of any Georgia opponent. More importantly for this matchup, its rushing performance wasn't simply the product of one explosive run.

The Commodores averaged **4.2 yards per rush with a 38.1% rushing success rate**.

For comparison, Georgia held Arkansas to **3.0 yards per rush and an 11.1% success rate**, while Oklahoma managed just **2.0 yards per rush and a 16.7% success rate**.

That gives us tangible evidence that Vanderbilt's improved offensive profile can translate against high-level SEC competition.

## A Rushing Strength We Trust

That Georgia performance also lines up with something we've seen throughout Vanderbilt's season.

Our opponent-adjusted **Rush Offense carries a High-Confidence designation**.

Confidence in our framework is separate from quality. It measures how consistently a unit has performed after accounting for its opponents. Vanderbilt's rushing performance hasn't simply appeared in one favorable matchup and disappeared in the next.

That's particularly attractive with Vanderbilt as a sizeable underdog.

A dependable rushing offense gives the Commodores a way to stay out of obvious passing situations, sustain possessions and prevent Ole Miss from turning this into the type of high-variance game in which a favorite can quickly create separation.

The Georgia game provided perhaps the best stress test yet, and Vanderbilt's rushing offense held up.

## Model + Confidence Support

Our opponent-adjusted model also makes this game **significantly more competitive than Vanderbilt +9.5**.

Vanderbilt qualifies for our **4+ Model Dog** indicator.

**140-102-6 ATS — 57.9%**

Vanderbilt also qualifies for the more selective confident **Rush O Model Dog** subset:

**48-25-3 ATS — 65.8%**
**Average ATS Margin: +4.13 points**

The latter is particularly relevant to this handicap. We're not simply identifying Vanderbilt as a model underdog; we're identifying a model underdog with a rushing offense whose underlying performance has been unusually stable.

## Ole Miss Off the Bye

Ole Miss also enters this game as a **road favorite coming off a bye**, while Vanderbilt played last week.

We've tested road favorites off a bye when the opponent was not also off a bye and our model disagreed with the favorite by at least three points.

The fade side in those situations has gone:

**45-20-2 ATS — 69.2%**
**Average ATS Margin: +5.23 points**

The bye isn't the reason for the wager. It's an additional situational indicator supporting a Vanderbilt position already justified by the underlying team ratings.

## The Bet

**Vanderbilt +9.5**

The core of this handicap is that **Vanderbilt appears better than the market's current valuation of the program**.

A 38–14 loss to Georgia does little to change Vanderbilt's reputation on the surface. But our efficiency data tells a very different story: Vanderbilt produced the best offensive performance Georgia has faced this season across several important metrics and, most notably, ran the football effectively against a defense that had largely shut down opposing rushing attacks.

That performance reinforces what our season-long numbers already show. Vanderbilt's rushing offense is a legitimate and relatively stable strength, while our recency-adjusted model sees considerably less separation between Vanderbilt and Ole Miss than the **+9.5** spread implies.

Add the model-dog confidence indicators and the historical road-favorite-off-bye situation, and we believe the market is giving Vanderbilt too many points.

**Vanderbilt +9.5 — Risk 1 Unit**
